The greatest discoveries often begin when someone decides to measure what everyone else assumed.




If you've ever wondered whether hypnosis is actually real, you're certainly not alone.

It's one of the first questions many of my clients ask, and honestly, it's a fair one.

For much of the last century, hypnosis carried a reputation that had little to do with clinical practice. Images of swinging pocket watches, stage performers, and people clucking like chickens became deeply rooted in popular culture. While entertaining, those performances overshadowed something much more interesting happening behind the scenes.


Researchers quietly began asking a different question.

Not "Can hypnosis entertain people?"

But rather,

"What is actually happening in the brain and body during hypnosis?"

That question has changed everything.


Why Hypnosis Earned a Reputation for Skepticism

For many years, scientists struggled to study hypnosis because they didn't have the technology to observe what was happening inside the brain.

Most of the evidence came from patient reports.

Someone would say they felt calmer.

Someone else would say their pain had decreased.

Another person would report sleeping better.

While those experiences were important, they were also subjective. Researchers wanted measurable evidence.

Without it, hypnosis was often viewed with skepticism—not because it had been disproven, but because it hadn't yet been thoroughly understood.

Meanwhile, stage hypnosis continued to dominate public perception.

As a result, many people mistakenly believed clinical hypnosis was about surrendering control or becoming unconscious, when in reality it is a state of focused attention and increased responsiveness to therapeutic suggestions.



What Modern Research Changed


Advances in neuroscience gave researchers something they had never had before.

The ability to observe the brain in action.

Using tools such as functional MRI (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), heart rate variability (HRV), and other physiological measurements, scientists began studying what actually happens while someone is hypnotized.

What they discovered was remarkable.

Hypnosis wasn't simply a person "pretending" to relax.

Researchers observed measurable changes in brain activity, attention, pain processing, emotional regulation, and physiological stress responses.

While no single brain scan can declare that someone is hypnotized, the growing body of evidence consistently demonstrates that hypnosis produces real, observable changes in how the brain processes information.


From the Classroom to Clinical Practice


One of the moments that stayed with me during my training at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute wasn't a dramatic hypnosis demonstration.

It was a scientific one.

One of my instructors connected a volunteer to a simple biofeedback device while guiding them into hypnosis. As the volunteer relaxed and their breathing slowed, we watched the monitor respond in real time.

Nothing magical was happening.

No one was "under someone's control."

Instead, we were watching the nervous system become calmer before our eyes.

It was one of those moments that shifted hypnosis from something people simply talked about to something we could actually observe.

That experience has stayed with me throughout my career.


Why Clinical Hypnosis Looks Nothing Like Stage Hypnosis


People are often surprised to learn that clinical hypnosis is far less dramatic than they expected.

There are no swinging watches.

No loss of control.

No mysterious powers.

In fact, most people describe hypnosis as feeling similar to becoming deeply absorbed in a good book, a favorite movie, or a peaceful drive where you suddenly realize you've arrived at your destination without remembering every mile along the way.

You're aware.

You're listening.

You're capable of opening your eyes whenever you choose.

What changes is your level of focused attention.

That focused attention allows the mind to become more receptive to new perspectives, healthier habits, and different emotional responses.

Why This Matters


Understanding the science behind hypnosis isn't about convincing skeptics.

It's about helping people make informed decisions.

Today, clinical hypnosis is being researched for conditions including anxiety, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, smoking cessation, trauma, and stroke rehabilitation.

Researchers continue to explore how focused attention influences the brain, the nervous system, and the body's ability to regulate stress.

As the evidence grows, hypnosis is increasingly finding its place alongside traditional medical and psychological care—not as a replacement for appropriate healthcare, but as another evidence-informed tool that may help people create meaningful change.

For me, that's exciting.

Not because science suddenly made hypnosis legitimate, but because science is beginning to explain what skilled clinicians have witnessed for decades.
